Indigenization Initiative Policy

At Camosun, Indigenization incorporates the values, principles, and teachings of Na鈥檛sa鈥檓aht 鈥� a Lekwungen term meaning 鈥渦nity or working together as one.鈥� Indigenization broadens the college's capacity to recognize, respect, acknowledge and integrate Indigenous worldviews.聽

Camosun's Indigenization Initiatives are aligned with BC's聽聽and the聽. The vision, goals, actions, and planning contexts are upheld by the聽Indigenization Policy.

Indigenization policy

Indigenization is a strong聽indicator of Camosun鈥檚 leadership role in regard to Indigenous adult education in British Columbia and beyond. Depicted as a聽four corner-post model, Indigenization is reflective of the traditional longhouses of the Lekwungen and W瘫S脕NE膯 peoples upon whose territories the college resides. Indigenization incorporates the values, principles, and teachings of Na鈥檛sa鈥檓aht 鈥� a Lekwungen term meaning 鈥渦nity or working together as one.鈥� The purpose of this policy is to articulate the commitment and vision of 98色花堂 in its ongoing work of Indigenization across and within all areas of the College.

Indigenization broadens the college's capacity to recognize, respect, acknowledge and integrate Indigenous worldviews by:

  • making the institution more welcoming and relevant to Indigenous learners;
  • preparing non-Indigenous students, graduates, and employees to better understand and co-exist with Indigenous peoples;
  • demonstrating Camosun鈥檚 capacity for creativity, innovation, and imagination, and
  • enhancing Camosun鈥檚 goal to be a college of life-changing learning.
